Building a better future for those who need it most

Build It Forward spreads generosity, love, hope, and joy by fostering a culture of giving back to the community. We’re dedicated to creating a brighter future for all by transforming homes and spaces, and making a positive impact on the lives of those who need it most.

Forward kindness

We take the ‘pay it forward’ approach and apply it to the construction industry – supporting those who are always willing to help others but don’t seek help themselves.

Community connection & teamwork

We foster meaningful connections among the suppliers and tradespeople in our local area, who volunteer their time, skills and materials thanks to a common desire to contribute positively to the community.

Help others who need it most

We believe that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, deserves a home and space that they can love.

Who do we help?

Build It Forward provides home building and maintenance services and supplies to those individuals within our community that face significant challenges in their lives.   Our focus is on helping individuals such as single parents, the elderly, victims of abuse and those experiencing severe financial hardship.

Through this initiative, our goal is to bring about a positive impact on the lives of those who face the greatest difficulties in our community.  At the same time, by encouraging others to get involved in our cause, we are fostering social connections, and promoting a culture and sense of purpose of giving back.

How does it work?

Build It Forward is led by Andy and Louise Kearns, who also run Perway Construction Services, a local building business.

The Perway team leverages their extensive network and connections to bring together a wide range of tradespeople and suppliers from around Perth and beyond, who volunteer their time, skills and materials to ensure Build It Forward projects are successful. Not only does this mean that those most in need benefit from our collective skills at no cost, but it also helps strengthen social bonds and enables us to contribute positively to the community.

Recent projects

Project Green – Stirling

Rhonda (pictured here with Martin from the Perway team) and her husband Rob had been dreaming of renovating their bathroom for years.  They finally found a tradesman who they thought was perfect for the job, and paid him in cash to start the work. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse when the tradesman started doing a subpar job, took their money, and disappeared without finishing the work. The couple was left with a half-finished bathroom that was in no condition to use.

This is where Build It Forward along with the Perway Construction Services team stepped in. Rhonda and Rob reached out to us, hoping we could help them rectify the poor workmanship and complete their dream bathroom. However, upon inspection, we realized that the damage was so extensive that it required a full renovation. It was heartbreaking to see the couple being taken advantage of by a con tradesman.

We took on the project and our team and extended trades including Ben Brady Plumbing and Perth Sparky Solutions provided our services at no cost, covering the expenses within to ensure that Rhonda and Rob would not have to suffer further financial loss. It was our way of rectifying the wrong done to them and showing that there are still honest builders out there who are committed to making a positive difference in people’s lives.

We believe that by giving back, we can make a difference in the lives of those who need it most and restore hope and trust in the building industry.

Project Lyn – Balcatta

Lyn is a Balcatta local who’s helped others all her life. She is a keen baker, used to host lady days in her back garden for as many as 60 people, and raised three kids on her own. Lyn is now in her 70s and, due to a recent injury and back pain, has been unable to keep on top of her garden work. It was starting to get out of control.

Build it Forward assembled a team of volunteers to get their hands dirty one June Saturday. The team carried out weeding, mowing and strimming – filling two skips with rubbish that was lying around the area! It was a pleasure to help Lyn out.

Project Shannon – Greenwood

This project saw Build It Forward renovate the home of a single mother in financial distress to help her sell it. We called in assistance from a huge team of tradespeople from around the Perth area, who all volunteered their time and skills to transform this home! The property sold and Shannon was able to benefit from the sell.

What does the future hold?

Build It Forward’s ambitious goals for the next five years include increasing the number of completed projects and beneficiaries through an expanded network of volunteers, sponsors and partners.

Our aim is to develop sustainable housing solutions, such as building affordable housing pods or repurposing existing buildings for low-income families.  Additionally, we plan to create training and employment opportunities for members of the local community.

As we continue to grow, we also envision expanding our Build It Forward into a nationwide scheme, giving builders and trades in other parts of the country the opportunity to participate in their own Build It Forward projects.  Join us in our mission to make a positive impact on our communities and create a brighter future for all.
